MARLBOROUGH COLLEGE IS A CHARITY NO. 309486 FOUNDED IN 1843 TO PROVIDE EDUCATION.
Marlborough College, founded in 1843 for the sons of Anglican clergy, aims to balance traditional values with progress and the nurture of individuality with acceptance of good collective discipline. In 1986 girls joined the college in the Sixth Form and the College has been fully co-educational since 1989. A pioneer in boarding co-education, Marlborough has also been a pioneer of Business Studies, the School Mathematics Project and the introduction of Oriental Languages.
Marlborough has a strong academic tradition. Almost any combination of the 23 A Level subjects available may be studied and all Sixth Form pupils study at least three A Levels alongside a General Studies course. The four members of the Careers Department are available to give individual counselling in preparation for Higher Education (to which 95% proceed) as well as other Careers guidance beyond.
Creative participation, whether in Art, Drama or Music, is an integral part of the Marlborough ethos. The Art Department is nationally known; there are over 20 Drama productions each year, the majority produced by the pupils; and the Music Department has earned wide recognition, with more than a third of the school learning music.
Pupils are able to involve themselves in a wide variety of sporting opportunities, both at a high level and recreational level. In pursuing excellence many pupils have gained recognition at County Level and beyond.
Although the majority are boarding, there are also day pupils. For all pupils the College places great emphasis on pastoral care. Each pupil has a personal tutor in addition to their Housemaster or Housemistress and the Chaplains play a central part in counselling.
